The Subaru Legacy is Subaru’s mid-size sedan that competes in the same class as Honda’s accord and Toyota’s Camry. The Legacy has been in production since 1989 and has come a long ways in both style and consumer satisfaction. Today’s Legacies score high reviews with publications such as Edmunds and continue to offer stiff competition to other vehicles in the same category.
On top of that, the Subaru Legacy has scored very well in safety ratings. According to the New York Times, the Subaru Legacy was scored a “top safety pick” by the International Institute for Highway Safety. This was based on side, front, rear and rollover crash tests.
Performance-wise, the Subaru Legacy has proven to be a contender in the sedan market. All models come stock with all wheel drive, which provides for crisp handling in all weather. Subarus have been popular in mountainous regions and cold climates for that exact reason.
There are eight different trim levels so the differences between each aren’t very big. Listed below are the different trim levels and their unique features.
2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i
The Subaru Legacy 2.5i is the basic model but still comes with several nice features including an anti-theft system, all wheel drive (of course) and optional automatic transmission. The MSRP starts at about $19,995 but you’ll want to check with your local Subaru dealer for their prices. There are usually financing specials and great lease deals in the Denver area.
Safety has become a great selling point for Subaru lately and the Legacy is no exception. With front airbags, side curtain airbags, rear child locks, collapsible steering column, traction control, anti-lock brakes and a tire pressure monitoring system, you’re as safe as you can be in a car. The 170 hp engine gets 29 miles per gallon on the highway and 22 mpg in the city.
2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium
The next step up in the Legacy lineup is the 2.5i Premium. This car comes with all the same features as the Legacy plus several extras that make this a more luxurious Legacy. The main difference between the 2.5i Premium and the normal 2.5i are that this one has alloy wheels and 8-way power driver’s seat controls. The price on these starts at about $20,995.
The safety features are all the same in the Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium as in the normal 2.5i. As long as you don’t drive this thing off the side of a mountain, you’ll be safe. I strongly recommend you take one of these out for a ride at one of your local Denver Subaru dealerships.
2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited
Moving up one more step is the Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited. The 2.5i Limited is noticeably higher up in the luxury category. Leather-trimmed upholstery and dual-zone automatic digital climate control come stock. Like all the rest, this one features an all wheel drive setup and an extremely high safety rating.
On top of all that, the 2.5i Limited comes with heated seats and a 440 watt audio system. Gas mileage is an impressive 31 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in the city. The 2.5i Limited starts at about $24,995.
2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Premium
The cars listed so far come stock with 170 hp engines but the Legacy 2.5GT Premium comes with a turbocharged 265 hp engine. Dual chrome exhaust outlets keep the vehicle breathing and looking great. Speaking of looking great, the 2.5GT Premium also comes with 18 inch fifteen spoke alloy wheels.
If you go with a manual transmission, you’ll get a six speed shifter and a fun ride. The automatic model is available as well, of course. This is a very sharp looking car and it performs like a champ on the road. You’ll get 25 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg in the city. The 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Premium starts at about $27,995.
2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Limited
The Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Limited comes with all the above features plus heated leather driver and passenger seats. Dual climate control is standard and that about rounds it out for the 2.5GT Limited. You can get started for about $29,995.
The main thing here are the leather heated seats. Leather seats are always a nice little extra but the “heated” portion is great. If you live in a location that has cold winters, the heated seats will keep you warm while the all wheel drive transmission keeps you on the road. The 2.5GT Limited gets 25 mpg on the highway and 18 in the city.
2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R
The Subaru Legacy 3.6R comes with a 3.6L H6 engine compared to the 2.5L H4 of the above vehicles. Where the 2.5 GT comes with a 16 valve engine, the 3.6R comes with 24. Other than that, I really can’t tell a whole lot of difference between the 3.6 series and 2.5 series.
Manual transmission isn’t available so you’ll always get automatic with the 3.6R. Safety is still a strong selling point, with airbags all around, side guard door beams, an anti-theft device and much more. This one also gets 25 mpg and 18 mpg on the highway and in the city. Starting price: $24,995.
2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Premium
The Subaru Legacy 3.6R Premium starts at about $25,995 and comes with heated seats/side mirrors, a 10-way power driver’s seat and an optional moon roof. The leather wrapped steering wheel comes standard and adds a nice little touch of class to the interior. Once again, gas mileage is 25 on the highway and 18 in the city.
2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Legacy
The 3.6R Legacy starts at around $27,995 and comes with leather trimmed upholstery, a 440 watt sound system, dual zone climate control and wood grain trim on the inside. The 256 hp engine has a lot of get-up and go but the focus is still on relaxation and comfort. The 3.6R (and all the Legacies actually) is a very strong competitor in the mid-size sedan market. You can expect to see a lot of these on the roads in the next few years.
